Was it yesterday? It seems to be weeks ago that I have been in civilized Mexico City with Luisa and her friends. Now I am out of Mexico but not yet back to Guatemala.

David and I share a miserable hotel room on a swathe of land shortly before the Guatemalan border. The authorities don’t leave us in because we could not pay the immigration fee for the car. Because we did not have the money? No, because you only can pay the fee to a bank counter right before the border, and this counter closes at 7pm. Now it is 7.20pm.

Neither can be drive back to Mexico – the visa for the car has expired today. This was also the reason why we drove the 250km (and 8 hours) back from Guatemala City to the Mexican border – we had to check out the car which we had not done when we crossed over to Guatemala over the green border. 

Shit.


I feel like in a pirates’ nest: some cheap whores stand along the street in between the borders, every second step you get asked whether you want to change some money or whether “you rich American” could support some poor local beggar. People in general seem to be quite drunk. Our hotel room does not have a window, but it has a private bath room. Only that the shower is not working. After having communicated this, the owner generously allowed us to use “the one working shower” directly under the water tank on the roof. There is not internet in the whole pirates’s nest and my mobile does not work. Expect for the dirty brothels there is no "regular" bar. It’s gonna be a fun evening.
