The world’s best places to watch birds? Hmm, I don’t know all of them but Mykines, a small island in the West of the Faeroes is definitely among them! PUFFINS! That's what is all about. The cutest bird you can imagine. They look so intelligent and always a bit depressed. And they can do amazing things: when they hunt for food for their family they can fly up to 10km out in the Ocean, dive quite deep and catch fishes. Now, how do you transport fish? The head is always heavier than the tail, so you might capsize while flying. Not the puffin: he catches up to 5 fish and lays them in his beak – one fish-head to the right, one to the left, one to the right… Clever, isn’t he?
Mykines is also a very beautiful spot. And it has the “Flying Teacher”! Since there is only one student on Mykines (a 8 year old boy, soon his 4 year old sister will join him), the teacher flies in for a week, and then, with a helicopter, leaves for another small island where he teaches his other “class” for a week. The rest of the 12 people living on the island take care of sheeps, run the small but cosy youth-hostel or simply enjoy the strong wind and the all 10 minutes changing weather!
On the ferry to Mykines (rather a speed-boat than a ferry, actually) I met two girls from - what do you guess? – Switzerland. Sure, this is the end of the world or even a bit beyond, but why is it the Swiss who reach out for the final frontier? One would assume that the British have the spirit to discover remote places… …but no, once again the Swiss travel far!
Anne and Clémence from Geneva were really cool travel mates - we travelled till Klaksvik and for the first time the Land-Cruiser could proof that three people can sleep quite comfortably in and on it.
Their observations about people on the Faeroes match with mine: everybody strongly believes in Jesus. All radio stations (there are at least three of them) love to play songs with “let’s pray together” or “it’s cool to praise Jesus” content. They don't like to go out. And they drive slowly. Even bikers don’t speed over 80km/h… Further on, they eat Puffins! How can they dare?
