The route of the world trip which started in April 2006 in Switzerland was defined – but not carved out of stone (remember: “open schedule”!). After France and Great Britain I crossed over to Iceland and discovered the beautiful island for more than 4 weeks. Next, the car was loaded on a container ship and I reached Newfoundland and Canada. Through Canada I made it to Alaska and to the Bering sea in the North. Then I headed down to the USA along the Westcoast and slowly reached Mexico (YEAH!!), Guatemala, all the other Central American countries and Panama. Due to recommendations from travellers me and co-pilot David dared driving through Colombia; our risk-management worked and we had no problems. Through Ecuador and Peru we reached amazing Bolivia and headed for the very South of South-America and a region called “Fireland” (Tierra del Fuego). After Argentina I shipped my Land-Cruiser to Asia (Singapore). By then, I had been on the road for about 1 year and 60'000km.
From Singapore I drove in the Northern direction through Malaysia and Thailand and crossed to border into Cambodia. My favorite sand-box! Me and co-pilot Oskar spent our hardest but also very rewarding days in the muddy North of Cambodia and then travelled on towards Laos. From there I tried to enter Vietnam (3 or 4 times) and got rejected every time.
I drove back to Bangkok (where I started to feel home after having arrived in this crazy city for the 4th time), shipped my Cruiser to Japan and took a plane to Bejing, China. From there and while my car was on its way to Japan, I took a train to Lhasa and discovered Tibet and Mt. Everest (just base camp :-). After a short stop in Shanghai I reached Japan and after X-mas I used a Ro-Ro service bound to Vladivostok, Russia. After some preperations for the Siberian temperatures, me and my new co-pilot Martin drove across Siberia in winter and reached Lake Baikal. From there I briefly stopped-by in Mongolia (too much snow to cross the country by car) and made it back to Switzerland after visiting Moscow, St. Pete, the Baltic Countries, Poland and Czech Republic.
I checked in back home exactly after two years, 100'000km and 43 countries. And: IT HAS BEEN PERFECT!!!
